Vicki Gray for Council

WE WILL DO IT!

Thank you all, especially that hearty band of talented, creative, dedicated volunteers - folks like Rashida Tessler, who designed those catchy signs; Mark Hutchins, who designed and maintained this lively website; Debbie Surani, who kept us financially honest and solvent; Robert and Paula McConnell, who opened their garden and their hearts to our cause; Joyce Scharf, who organized those stuffing parties; David Koven, who offered his kitchen table; Ross Dizon, who made my words sound so good in Tagalog and Spanish; Dennis Ocampo and Gregory Gazaway, who kept a step ahead of the "Midnight Skulker;" that hearty band that raised a ruckus at the Farmers' Market last Saturday - and all of you who gave your time, your money, and your hearts to what we were trying to do. You not only made possible but were our grassroots people's campaign.

I would also like to thank my fellow candidates, who conducted the campaign in a civil and civic fashion. Sharing so many events with you, I got to know you and like you all on a human level, much as we might differ on particular issues.

Above all, I would like to thank the people of Vallejo who attended the several forums and the thousands of you concerned enough to vote. I learned a lot from you and gained energy every time I was in your company. You have my respect and love. This remains my kind of town, and you are my kind of people.

So, what do we do now? First of all, don't be depressed. I'm not. I don't consider that we "lost." Over 4,000 votes first time out is nothing to be ashamed of. A third of those who voted for council voted for me. Having raised important issues and having hopefully maintained my dignity and integrity in the process, I consider that I won.

I hope that you consider that you too won. By your votes, you revealed the first cracks in a decrepit old system and have given fair warning that a sizeable and growing number of Vallejoans will be watching the council closely these next two years. I will be with you in that continuing effort.

Old ways always die slowly. It may take time, but in the end - two years? - we will do it!

Again, thank you and God Bless. It has been an honor and a privilege.

Vicki
